Barbs are popular in the aquarium hobby and regardless of which type of aquarists you are, you can probably find a barb species suitable for you. Beginner aquarists can for instance opt for Cherry barbs, since the Cherry barb is a beautiful and adaptable fish that is not very sensitive. If you want to try breeding fish in your aquarium, the Tiger barb is another great choice since these fishes frequently reproduce without needing any particular coaxing. If you are lucky enough to own a really big aquarium and want to fill it with big fish, you can for instance go for a group of Tinfoil barbs. The Tinfoil barb can reach a length of 14 inche (35 centimetres).
A majority of the barb species is schooling fish and should never be kept in groups consisting of fewer than five specimens. Keeping barbs in groups that are too small can be highly stressful for the fish and the stress will make them more susceptible to illness. Parasites that can be handled by the immune system of a healthy fish can for instance get a chance to attack the barb due to this constant state of stress. A stressed fish can also loose its colours and fail to grow. Before you get a barb species for your aquarium you should therefore research it to find out how large a group you need to get.
